Still no decision on what I’ll take tomorrow 7am … Meanwhile, today we crossed Lake Geneva from Lausanne to Evian. Can you guess which camera + lens combo took these four shots ? And don’t cheat by looking into the Exif …;) (click on pictures for high res)

So classic 35 :) So my guess would be the M9 + Summilux 35. Right?
1/2 right
M8 + 50 Cron?
Here too 50%
DP2 after what you said “of bright light” in a previous post.
Actually, the M8 has in my opinon a look quite close to the DP2 in bright light.
M9 + 35 would be my guess at 2.8 ( :
This is a tricky one as you do some post processing (de-sat, maybe adding glow?) – based on the limited depth of field I don’t think it’s the DP2. I think the lens is fairly fast so my guess would be a fast 50 (summicron) on the M9
Good observation on the depth of field. Got the field of view right though.

Hi
I’m probably too late (just arrived from MZ) but this was easy! ;-)
M9 with 35 + M8 with 50!!
What you say!!
The 35 gives 35 with M9 and close to 50 with m8
The 50 gives 50 with m9 andalmost 70 with m8
Two bodies avoid constant swping and in case one goes bad (knockig madly on the kitchen table now!) you stil get pictures other wise….
but of course thta’s me….
And I would pack the 75 too… you know, just in case ;-) and leave the Hexa home…
Have the Joy and the Light! God Speed!
Hi Miguel !
I am not as strong as you and can’t carry large bags. Two bodies, to much thinking !
75mm is a Miguel focal length (actually 85mm) ;)
Un abraco to you en beijos to Gina!
Hi Yannick, great shots showing some nice colors and creamy bookeh.
As for your trip, since it sounds like a trip of lifetime i would therefore take the highrst quality you have ie M9 and the 35mm lense. The 35mm being a versatile lense for sure. As others said, you may want to take the M8 in case something happens to your M9, but that is am additional weight which you probably not use at all.
Have a safe trip.
Tibor
35mm is not versatile enough in my opinion. Difficult to do tight cityscapes. cheers.
Number 1 and 3, M9+35 lux. Number 2 and 4 M9+50 Cron or M8+35 Lux. I saw them very small in my iPhone so I did not apreciate depth of field.
Partly right Daniel … felicidades !
M9 Summilux 35 :-)
50% correct ;)
35mm distortion. 50mm FOV. So, 35mm lens on crop camera.
Excellent … so the camera is ? ;)
I love the first and the third shots !
What’s the answer ? ;-)
I must say now that I saw the pictures in a bigger screen that they could be M8+35 Lux.
It looks like m9+50mm, or m8, 35mm? I haven’t checked other comments or Exif yet. Did you made your mind up now? Great itinerary btw. Good luck, looking forward to see more of your great work here Yanick. :) One day I’d love to do similar thing.
matt
Thanks Matt, don’t hesitate, just do it !
Seriously, the 35mm distortion bothers me. I shoot a CV 35/1.4 on a Sony NEX and as much as I like the 50mm FOV I really dislike the perspective distortion characteristic to 35mm lenses. I vote for taking the M9 + 50 lux.
Speaking of which, have you considered the NEX instead of the M8? Cheaper, you can resell it after the trip; quality and hi iso are close to M9. It doesn’t have a viewfinder so you’d have to focus it like a Rollei, but it’s small, light, and nobody would take you seriously if they see you shooting one, which is, I suppose, the point after all. The other advantage is that manual focus is very precise even at 1.4 and there is no focus shift (well, the shift is there, but it doesn’t matter). If you put a 90mm or 75mm Summarit on the NEX—which I bet Leica would lend you if you asked nicely, seeing how you are famous and all :-) and they want to push the Summarits—you have a terrific medium long lens in addition to the 35 lux. For those safari shots. :-)
Oh, and the NEX can do video, which can be interesting at times. And 7 fps.
I can understand that. But overall, distortion can be reduced by taking care of lines when framing. I personally don’t do it, I use distortion and my height as a distinctive element.
50 Lux … tried it but did not like the ergonomics and hate the framelines in the M9. (more tomorrow in a post).
As for the NEX and any other of the large sensor cameras, I won’t use them as long as they do not provide a focus ring with distance markings. It is impossible to zone focus without it, especially when one shoots wide open a lot like I do. The manual focus of the Nex is basically for pretty static scenes in my opinion, and I will never use the LCD to frame ;)
Safari … not for me … I like cities.
Video, you are completely right, I’d love to have HD on one of my cameras. I have to borrow my girlfriend’s G2 all the time.
Oh, I meant use Leica lenses on the NEX. So there are both aperture and DOF markings. Zone focusing would be just as easy as on the M8.
The NEX also has peaking which is incredibly precise especially wide open. Try it sometime when you get back. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
35 mm at a full frame sensor, is my guess.
Got the focal right Carsten !
And the answer is : 35mm Lux Asph on Leica M8. More in tomorrow’s post. Thanks for participating (without cheating) ;)
