Cactus Island

Somewhere in the middle of the Uyuni salt lake stands the Island of Incahuasi. Some prefer to call it Cactus island since it is covered by the thorny plants. The place is completely surreal, and as a result, bolsers some creative behaviours by the visitors (click on pictures for high res)

Million of years ago, a part of the Pacific Ocean found itself cut away and included in the rise of the Andes Chain. Eventually, all water evaporated and left a huge plain full of salt. It is a strange feeling to drive up to 150km on a virgin white surface.  Seems like ice and that the ground is going to break at any time. The Uyuni Salar is obviously used to provide salt to all of Bolivia, even though the workers conditons are reminiscent of decades ago. Given the amount of supply, there is enough for billion years I guess.  (click on pictures for high res)

Except for the enormous Salt Lake, there isn´t much to see in Uyuni. Except maybe for this old train cemetery.  (click on pictures for high res)
