First let me thank all of you that submitted a picture. I think this was a good experience as it let us discover a lot of photographers and their work. 35 photographs were posted and I could not help doing a little analysis of the work submitted. I thought some of you would also be interested to discover the results. By no means it represents the global street photography community, but probably a good view on the readership of this website.

Place where picture was taken :
55% : Europe
20% : North America
12% : Asia
6% : Oceania
2% : Middle East
2% : South America

So Europe is the main stage for street photography. Not so surprising, this is a Western world hobby, right ? ;) Too bad there were so few pictures from other continents, and none from Africa.

Female or Male :
Female : 9%
Male : 91%

Is street photography a male discipline ? Certainly not, even though I think there is definitely a majority of male. Or maybe female street photographers just don’t hang on the internet and spend more time on the streets .

B&W of Color :
B&W : 62%
Color : 38%

I was surprised to see so many B&W submissions. Are the colors of our times not tempting ? Or does street photography have to be in B&W ?

Picture orientation :
Landscape : 69%
Portrait : 17%
Square : 11%
Panoramic : 3%

Since most camera use the 24x36mm format, it isn’t so surprising to see landscape as the favorite orientation. Not that square is not too far from portrait. Who said you should not crop ? ;)

Digital or film :
Digital : 89%
Film : 11%

In some ways sad, but digital has completely taken over. Or maybe film people don’t bother scanning their pictures.

Camera used :
Leica M9 : 31%
Leica M8 : 14%
Leica film : 9%
DSLR : 20%
4/3rds : 9%
P&S : 9%
Xpan : 3%

More than 50% of submission were taken with a Leica M. The best camera for street photography ? There is some of that, but I think this data represents mainly the readers of this website. Indeed, I shoot Leica and write a lot about rangefinders and their use.

This concludes the 2011 favorite series. It will be repeated in the future, maybe in a new format. I hope you enjoyed it and thanks again to all participants. I will end by posting our favorite picture of 2011, the one that someone else took for us. ;)  (click on picture for high res)

The last picture of this 2011 favorite series had to be something special. Special to me since it was submitted by my girlfriend and trip partner. Natalia takes a lot of pictures too, and though our styles differ completely, there is a lot of poetry and creativity in her photography. Not a 100% street photographer, she does often include humans in her picture, or the feel of their presence. The shot below was taken in the early part of our trip, that is Istanbul, Turkey.

Panasonic G2 with 20mm F1.7

This is what Natalia wrote about her shot :

“Istanbul. A little street far from the buoyant tourist activity. Sometimes faces say more than words”.

Two more pictures to go and we will conclude with that special section dedicated to readers’ favorite photographs. Let’s head today to London for this shot by Dave Dowding.

Leica M9 with 50mm Summilux Asph

This is what David wrote about his shot :

I was waiting for my daughter at the train station the other day when I spotted this commuter with his young child. It made for a rather funny sight in the rush of Friday night commuters. I love how the 50mm Summilux and isolate the subject from the background the detail is amazing.

Paris ! Today we visit the City of Lights through this shot by Joao Afonso Ferreira from Portugal taken in November.

NEX-5N+18-55 OSS. PP in Lr3+Nik Color Efex

This is what Joao wrote about his shot :

The picture I am sending it is from a Paris weekend trip to visit Paris Photo. On the day before I made an impulse buy of a NEX-5N camera and it has been a revelation. And truly a welcome and liberating change from my normal DSLR kit. This was shot with the kit lens from my belly ;). As I come from a small town the underground scenes always have some appeal to me. I am now experimenting with old inexpensive reflex MF lenses and I really enjoy it. I may invest in some quality RF lenses in the future (still decidiing my favorite FL!).

Let’s go to Poznan, Poland, today and have a look at this shot from Elyane Moulin from Switzerland.

Taken with Leica D-Lux

This is what Elyane wrote about her shot :

I took this photo in June, 2011 at the Station of Poznan. I waited for the train which had to drive me to Cracow when I perceived this couple which said itself “goodbye” on the platform. I often wondered why they parted….

The island of Bali, Indonesia is our host today with this shot taken by Rob Knijn from Holland.

Leica M8 with 35mm Summicron Asph.

This is what Rob wrote about his picture :

I am a long time Leica photographer, but it is my hobby, my profession is making paintings, I'm an artist. Street photography is my main interest, but I can't seem to find the time to go out and about on a regular basis. But then again I also enjoy the street photography of others. Looking in to books and on the internet of course.

It was shot in Ubud, Bali last month. This is my best street shot this year. I quite like  the way that the persons are cut off at the edge of the frame. They just finished their soccer practice, the boy in front just took a sip of his bottle, you can see that his cheek is filled with water. I also like the way the picture 'reads', one can go around the picture clockwise, from person to person, then to the tree, down, and then the bikes.Admirable is also the spirit of the young boy in front, you can see that his outfit is really dirty after the training session.

Some other pictures and paintings on my website: www.robknijn.nl It's not much, still working on it.
