In French, Checkers translates into the elegant expression of "Jeu de dames", or literally, the "Game of ladies". (click on pictures for high res)

  1. In German it's only "Dame" -> "Ladies".

  2. Also, in french Chess is “jeu d’échec” in which échec means both check and failure. Hence the joke: “for some men a game of ladies is a game of failure” (un jeu de dame est un jeu d’échec)
